The Adventurer: 4 ways to keep your fitness levels up.

*insert drumroll & lay out the red carpet* Ladies & gentlemen, may I have your attention please…I am here to tell you about one of my goals for 2017 which is to run a full marathon (A distance of about 42km) & to achieve this goal, it is paramount that I keep my body in the best shape possible.

Let’s do this!

My pastor has taught me that your life always moves in the direction of your thoughts so I wasn’t suprised when I came across Truppr which is a community of fitness enthusiasts where weekly fitness events are hosted & this has really aided my goal of getting ready for the marathon.

I began running 5km with my very first Truppr event (I ended up doing about 6.2km that day cos we took a wrong route) and I stopped to walk 3 times…Sigh.

The next weekend, I did a total run of about 8km with a time of 49:21 & last Saturday, I recorded a personal best with a run of 8.96km in 50:21 which means I am covering more ground in less time (without any walk-stops). Whoop!

Good…very good…infact, very, very good

Apart from running, I also signed up for a dance aerobics class with some of the coolest fitness enthusiasts ever (Got to work those quads) and it holds every other week at the BodyRox Fitness Studio. This week, I am starting a new workout regime that is focused on building upper body strength for mountain climbing/hiking trips (Kilamanjaro, I am looking at you!)

So here goes my 4 tips to keep your energy levels at a very good rate:

  1. Just do it: You can talk so much about signing up at a gym or working out at home but if you never take that first step, it will be all talk and no action and talk only works your mouth muscles, so get up & go!
  2. Join a fitness club: There is just this extra motivation that comes when you have other people that share a similar passion with you. Even on days when you don’t feel like it, their constant reminders will be there to pull you through. If Truppr is in your city, that is a good place to start.
  3. Work out at home: Don’t let a gym subscription stand in your way of being fit as there are a lot of simple exercises you can do at home and will keep you in top shape. You can start with a simple skipping rope (100 skips every morning is a good place to start) and then gradually add push-ups, sit-ups, jumping jacks etal and this will keep your body in a good state.
  4. Eat a balanced diet: Food is key to staying fit and a good diet will aid you in reaching your fitness goals. Most people always think eating healthy is expensive but it isn’t. For example, beans has most of the nutrients you need and it isn’t expensive. Fruits and other veggies are affordable too.

All in all, I am well and truly on my way to living an active & healthy lifestyle which is needed for the many adventures the journeyman has to embark on.
